Sorrento: Day 4
Today we were leaving Rome and venturing off to Sorrento. On the way to Sorrento, our plan was to sightsee Mt. Vesuvius which was located on the Bay of Naples and is the only European volcano to have errupted in the last 100 years. It is most known for it's destruction of the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Pompeii we'd be visiting later as well. On the way up to the massive mountain we stopped for lunch and sat on the patio with the beautiful view. After we ate, the bus brought us even higher up the mountain to the area where we would begin our hike. The hike wasn't too bad, it went by pretty quick. Of course, it was extremely hot just like every other day of our tour, which is the only thing I could possibly choose to complain about if I had to. Once we reached the checkpoint we had some time to take pictures and rest while we waited for the rest of the group to catch up. At the checkpoint is also where we met our guide for the rest of the mountain, who was very entertaining and I enjoyed listening to rather that most of our other guides. We got to actually look inside the volcano and see the smoke that it was making on the side. Once we reached the top it seemed like such an accomplishment and the view was amazing. It was very frustrating trying to take pictures because my little point and shoot camera could not capture half of the beauty of the view. After climbing the mountain, we went to our hotel in Sorrento which we'd only be at for 1 night. It was awesome, it was on a hill so the floors went down instead of up! We had dinner at the hotel, and after had a few hours to catch the sunset and walk around the beautiful town. It was upsetting that we only had a few hours here, but we made the best of it and got some of the best gelato! This night a lot of the group went out and had a lot of fun, but Kristen and I decided we were too exhausted and stayed in. From what I saw Sorrento was beautiful and I would love to make another trip there and actually experience it!
